A lot of people say to us “What? Mobile homes? Why would you decide to do that?” And so, this is for our family, friends, and everybody who ever asked us that question. We’ve been investing in mobile homes for the past few years, and we just wanted to share our truth and our story about how we got started in this business.
When we started, we were in our nine to five jobs. We were easily working 50 to 70 hours a week. We hated those jobs.
We felt like we were giving so much of ourselves but weren’t getting a lot back in return as far as just feeling fulfilled outside of a paycheck. And that started being detrimental to our marriage. So, we decided it was time for us to not just take control of our lives but also do something together.
Initially we read the book Rich Dad Poor Dad and we learned about the power of passive income and cash flow. And we were like, yes, we want to be able to make money in our sleep. We wanted to get away from exchanging our time for money and start building some assets and building some wealth.
So, we decided to become full-time real estate entrepreneurs to start owning our own lifestyle, spending more time with one another, free ourselves from the prison we created with our 9 to 5 jobs and simply start making money on our own.
That was actually something that we wanted to do when we first got together. We said before we have kids, we’re going to establish ourselves, we’re going to open a business and we’re going to be successful at it.
And we got into big trouble early on…
The thing is we were just having such a hard time finding the time to do any deals in real estate, finding the knowledge, and finding who to trust in the industry. We were still struggling in our 9 to 5 trying to pay our bills and we couldn’t even figure out how to do one deal.
We were losing a lot of confidence within ourselves. We started blaming ourselves and blaming each other. And we weren’t getting closer to escaping the prison that we call our jobs.
So, we started taking a ton of action by reading book after book, article after article, looking stuff up online…we were like junkies. Then we joined a real estate group and took a shot by investing in a burnout home.
It was completely terrible and burned down. But we saw an opportunity and bought it for about 60 grand. And we didn’t really know anything about fixing and flipping homes at the time other than what we read. So that was definitely terrifying.
Then we met a mentor who ended up scamming us out of about 30 grand that we had pooled together for the fix and flip. This hit us badly because we took so much pride in saving that money by avoiding student loans and not doing what we saw other people doing. But there really wasn’t much that we could do. Quaint. And little did we know it was going to take us 15 months to eventually get our money back.
But we didn’t want to give up…
We figured learning got us here so learning can get us out. We kept putting ourselves in a position to learn. We ended up meeting a guy who was about 80 years old, and he was making somewhere between $20,000 to $50,000 through mobile home investing while only investing about $5,000 of his own money per deal. And on some of these deals he was actually getting the homes for free!
So we rushed home and did as much research as we could on mobile home investing through YouTube and books. Until we eventually found a mentor who was really awesome. And before we knew it we were doing deals. We were buying properties for under $5,000 and flipping them for 2, 3, 4, or sometimes 5 times that. And we were able to get ourselves out of debt and really get our business going. That’s when we discovered the secret to owning our own lifestyle was through mobile home investing.
We started by searching for motivated sellers and then we would purchase their homes from them. Then we’d find a handyman on Craigslist to go and fix the home for us. And then shortly after that we would sell the home and make 2 to 5 times our investment.

It was amazing. We were starting to make momentum with the business, but there was still a problem. Each deal took a lot of time. We were completely unorganized. We were like crazy people trying to do stuff out here with no system and no team.
There was just so much that we were trying to take on our own shoulders. And then on top of that, there’s just not a lot of people to learn from in the mobile home industry outside of a couple of books that were written a long time ago and a few videos on YouTube.
It took a lot of time and money for us to figure out what systems and processes truly work. And make sure that we’re not working as many hours as we were working with our 9 to 5. There’s a lot to do from meeting with the handyman, with different sellers, meeting the buyers, managing calls with no follow-up system and all of that.
Through all the chaos and all of the craziness with our business we learned a lot of lessons. And we thought, if there’s ever anybody that wants to get into mobile home investing and wants to learn how to do what we’re doing, we should definitely package something up for them to help them get started and not have to deal with all the craziness we had to.
